Umpiring opportunities for former players

Parkway Little League will once again offer umpiring opportunities to former Parkway Little League players who have aged out of the league.  There will be six 2-hour classes held each Monday beginning March 8th, 2021 at 6:30pm.   With Covid still lingering, we are only able to invite a small number of kids to be at the class in-person while the rest will be invited to participate via Zoom For those who will end up attending in-person, the location this year is the gym at the Stratford Street Church, in West Roxbury.

The class is taught by Ed King, a West Roxbury resident and a long-time umpire-in-chief for Little League International and Parkway Little League.  He has been teaching this class for decades and offers his own vast experience to reinforce the basic rules of the Little League version of baseball.  Kids who complete the course and receive a passing grade on the test at the end of the sessions will be put into rotation to umpire minor-league and instructional games where available and receive pay for their effort ($20-$40 per game).  All assignments will depend on the league schedules and the availability and responsibility of eligible umpires.

While we expect to have some rulebooks available for students, you can get a jump on things by purchasing and downloading the Little League Rulebook from your online App store.  Returning umpires should use last year’s book in case we run out of new books and need to order more.

Class schedule for the first five classes:  March 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5, 6:30-8:30pm.  The sixth class is an hour of on-field training and is tentatively scheduled at the PLL Complex on Saturday, April 10th, with the time TBD.  After the training, we will hold the final exam which itself takes about an hour.
